COMPETITION RULES

The core PCA Latte Art Competition rules for every competitor.

01

Official setup and check-in

  • Use the PCA designated 300 ml competition cup.
  • Free Pour only. Etching and drawing tools are not permitted.
  • Official milk is Riverina Fresh Full Cream.
  • Official coffee is V5 Coffee, The Major Blend.
  • Official machines are two Sanremo D8 PRO 2GRP BLACK machines.
  • Official grinders are two Fiorenzato F64 EVO BLACK grinders.
  • Arrive and sign in 30 minutes before your scheduled start.
  • Competition order and station assignment are confirmed during the live draw and organiser briefing.
  • Non-official beans and milk are not permitted in the venue during competition.
02

Three minute performance

  • The MC starts the timer and both competitors pour at the same time.
  • Competitors may prepare one or more cups.
  • The final judging cup must be on the designated table before time expires.
  • Judging begins immediately when the round finishes.
03

Timing and equipment faults

  • The MC gives reminders at 1 minute, 30 seconds and 15 seconds remaining.
  • The head judge may pause or stop the timer if an official machine or grinder malfunctions.
  • Work completed after the three minute limit is disqualified.
04

Design repetition

  • The same design may be used no more than twice in the competition.
  • A third use of the same design disqualifies the competitor from advancing.
  • Small changes in pose or added dots, clouds, suns or hearts do not create a new design.
  • A sitting or standing flying horse, or a single or double wing Pegasus, is the same design.
  • A sitting or walking camel is the same design.
  • A genuinely different main subject or technique is a different design, for example a standing rooster and a flying rooster.
05

Judging

  • Three judges are selected at random for each match from Caleb, Amy, Victor and Jodie.
  • Each judging panel includes one head judge and two judges.
  • Judges assess completeness, colour contrast, placement, creativity and difficulty.
  • Bar workflow is used when the first four categories are tied.
  • Heart, Tulip and Rosetta are basic patterns. Complex creative patterns and strong contrast may score higher.
  • Competitors may choose Single Espresso, Double Shot or Double Ristretto. The chosen extraction may affect scoring.
06

Bar workflow

  • Clean the portafilter before dosing and flush the group before locking in.
  • Start extraction immediately after locking in the portafilter.
  • Wipe the drip tray before placing cups and use towels correctly.
  • Purge and wipe the steam wand after frothing.
  • Keep the bar tidy, present a clean cup and minimise waste.
  • The head judge casts the independent bar workflow vote.
07

Disqualification

  • Exceeding the three minute time limit.
  • Presenting a cup filled to less than 80 percent.
  • Using the same design more than twice in the competition.
